The Life of an Interim Executive Director

The phone rings and Don Johnson tells us about the opportunity for a possible interim position opening.  “Could I submit your names?”  We get excited and our first question is “where?”  We feel like “missionaries” being called to serve in mysterious new lands and go on new adventures.  For us those new lands have included Illinois, North Dakota, and two separate Minnesota camps.  One thing they all have in common has been their understanding of their mission in Christ.  Their passion, loyalty, and commitment to their faith community at camp is remarkable.

While hospitality is always in the forefront at our arrival, warming up and getting used to new face(s) or our routine of operating, creates some apprehension. Within a week we are being accepted into their family team.  Upon our departure a comment we hear is “we didn’t feel we needed an interim, but we’re glad the board agreed to approach LOM for Don’s advice.”

We get busy with staff input into updating financial management and policies, personnel updates, tending to all buildings and equipment, welcoming visitors, volunteers, bishops, rostered leaders, providers, plus sampling tastes of the camp cuisine.  Recommendations are made to the board such as new policy approvals, creating a sustainability committee, the creation of a succession policy, and other considerations.

Our commitment to transparency and honest objectivity relieves the anxiety of staff and board during our tenure with them.  Board members have said, “We need an objective eye to help us discern the person we want to call or direction we want to go.”  We happily agree and begin to transition with the new director with the sharing of essential operations, data, and insight into the life of the camp.  We can spend from a day to two weeks assuring they understand the uniqueness of the camp they will serve.

Time flies and we find that we have fallen in love and adopted staff and an admiration at their living and sharing the Gospel.  It’s difficult to say goodbye to the camps staff that have welcomed Muslims, refugees from around the world, and that interesting and exciting Scandinavian world of Minnesota.

Thank you to LOMC, Red Willow, Luther Crest, and Pathways for allowing us to walk with you during your time of transition–Carolyn and Jerry Fritsch

Help Promote the 2018 LOM Curriculum

The LOM Curriculum Committee would like to ask for your help in spreading the news to the congregations in your area about the 2018 LOM Curriculum, “This Changes Everything.”   Please take a moment out of your day and share the following information to some congregations who support your ministry. LOM has a VBS bundle that we believe could be very useful to many congregations, but we need your help to get the word out!  All you have to copy the following and share it!  You can even cut and paste the text below.

***Here is wording for you to send to congregations***

As a supporter of our camp, you know about our ministry, but you may not know that we are a part of a larger organization called Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, or LOM.  LOM is an organization that exists to empower and equip outdoor ministry organizations, and one of the ways that they do that is by producing an outdoor curriculum each year.

Now, the same easy to use and theologically strong curriculum is available for congregations to use for Vacation Bible School.  LOM’s 2018 theme, This Changes Everything, will help campers learn how God’s grace changes these things and how we can work with others to show that grace to the world.  This curriculum has the same title as the theme for the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering.  It has been written in collaboration with the gathering team.  The lessons are not the same but compliment those that will be used for the gathering.

LOM’s VBS package includes all you need to run your own Vacation Bible School program: 5 full days of Bible Study designed for lower and upper elementary students, crafts, games and the This Changes Everything graphics.  Priced at only $100, your congregation gets the tools that you need to help the children in your community engage with the Bible and their faith.  This theme, as well as others, are available on the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries website at www.lomnetwork.org.

2018 International Camp Counselor Program

From Mark Burkhardt, Program Director for Outdoor Ministries for the ELCA:

I am pleased to announce that we will again be bringing up to 40 Lutheran young adults to the United States this summer to serve as leaders in our summer camping programs.  All ELCA affiliated camps are eligible to participate.  I am writing to invite your participation in this exciting program.  We are continuing to improve the interview process overseas and are making a strong effort to ensure appropriate conversational skills in the English language.  Our feedback from the last several summers continues to be positive.

In keeping with our goal of moving the program beyond Europe we anticipate hosting 10-15 counselors from Europe and 25-30 counselors from Asia, Africa and Latin America.  If possible, you should consider hosting an international counselor from an overseas church with whom your local ELCA synod has a companion synod relationship.  Sometimes, there is financial assistance available through the synod to help fund an international visitor.  If you need additional information about the ELCA Companion Synod Program, please give me a call.

I also want to stress that international counselors should not be looked at as direct substitutes for your regular U.S. counselors.  Instead, they should be seen as valuable resources who can bring a global perspective to your camping program.  We have also discovered that international counselors work very well in day camp settings. Our manual for host camps also offers helpful suggestions for making the experience a positive one for all concerned.

I am enclosing a more detailed information sheet about the program.

If you are interested in hosting an international counselor, please complete the form and return it to Zara Tunstill by fax or e-mail.   Requests from camps will be considered in the order they are received, with priority being given to companion synod relationships.
