At the request of LOM, Keith Johnson, “The Board Coach,” volunteered to develop seven 10-minute sessions to help grow the effectiveness, capacity, and capability of boards. The COVID 19 pandemic has shown the importance of a strong board to help camps navigate through the crisis. Please pay special attention to sessions two, three, four and seven where advance preparation is recommended as indicated by underlining below. Each video has one or two discussion questions that you may choose to use. Contact Keith with questions, for more information or support.
1. Activating the Board Engine
The “Non-Profit Quarterly” tells us that the majority of boards are under-performing. This session will challenge your board to grow its capacity and capability, and cites the benefits to the executive director and entire ministry. 2. Good Governance Basics
This session overviews the basics of good governance and is grounded in the book “The Corporate Person” by Harold Everson. The benefits of generative thinking is also introduced. It is recommended you have copies of your board’s job description to review as part of the session. Bonus slides address decision making, good communication and handling complaints. 3. Recruiting Great Board Members
How can you find the absolute best people in your constituency to serve on your board? The session identifies criteria for exceptional members and challenges current members in their service. It is recommended a matrix (chart) profiling members and their gifts and abilities be completed prior to the session. Click here to download the video.
4.Leading through a Strategic Vision & Plan
Does your camp have a strategic vision, a destination for ministry? The session will introduce how a strategic vision and plan can guide your work and increase the effectiveness of the board and staff. 5. Four Keys to a Strong Board & Executive Relationship
The most important relationship in your camp ministry is between the board and executive director. Common problems in the relationship will be identified and four keys to a strong relationship will be identified to create a culture of mutual support and accountability. 6. How A Governance Committee Can Transform the Board
The purpose of a governance committee (or someone designated to fulfill this function) is to focus on growing board capacity, capability, and effectiveness so the board can focus on the future of the ministry. A job description and work plan will be introduced. Click here to download the video.

This session examines why people give and challenges board members to give generously and support fund raising activities.
